Joe served in the 116th Congress on the Veterans Affairs and Natural Resources committees.
He was ranked one of the most independent and effective members of Congress, receiving multiple awards including the Jefferson Bipartisanship Award by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Sierra Club’s Legislator of the year.

Having never run for political office prior to the 2018 election, Cunningham became the first democrat in 40 years to win South Carolina’s First Congressional District.
